European cultural and spiritual
Humanism peaked between the late 15th century
and early 17th century. It reached a wealth of
disciplines as a result of focusing on mankind and of using the Classical world
as a mirror for self-reflection and meditation. It is therefore not possible to
look on Humanism merely as a cultural movement.
Based on philological grounds, the
wise humanists contributed to the evolution of science and reached clearly
defined positions in the fields of politics, philosophy, theology, philology,
medicine, fine arts
The province of Jaén had one of its most celebrated
periods at the time when European Humanism was in full swing. The province,
specially the University of Baeza, became integrated in the European mainstream
by contributing to the development of modern Europe such significant names as
Huarte de San Juan, Alfonso Chacón, Luis de Carvajal, Pérez de Ayala, Jerónimo
de Prado, Andrés de Vandelvira, Pérez de Valdivia, Jiménez Patón, Pérez de Moya,
Gaspar Becerra
